11-01-2016—Saffron Harvest

Saffron crocuses flower irregularly across a month or so. Since my garden lacks space for a dedicated crocus field, systematic harvest is difficult. I've found the easiest way to use the saffron threads (styles + stigmas) is picked fresh, making dishes based on flower's own timing.

A couple years ago, I bought Drimia maritima bulb at Home Depot. It was the size of a cantaloupe; I couldn't pass it up.
